Common Questions

Having supplied thousands of wall beds in over twenty years, there´s not many questions that our Hideaway staff cannot answer for you. We have attempted to answer a few for you here, but if you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact Sarah or Beth.

What is a wall bed?

A wall bed is a bed that you fold down from the wall, and after a great night's sleep, folds back up against the wall to provide daytime floor space. It is not the comedy bed of 'Laurel and Hardy' films - you will not disappear into a cupboard with a Hideaway mechanism. In fact, wall beds have been around for a long time - from the smallest country cottage to luxury apartments, people have always needed more space.

Will a wall bed fit into my room?

How long will it last?

Hideaway systems are contract standard, tested to 10,000 cycles (that's nearly 30 years of every night use), and come complete with a 5 year warranty. Hideaway wall bed mechanisms are used as a benchmark by the new European standards for safety and reliability.

Are wall beds comfortable?

Yes. Hideaway wall beds are designed for every-night sleeping, and you can use most mattresses on them. Hideaway use a sprung slatted base to give support to the shape of your body, and using good quality mattresses, are more comfortable than conventional beds.

Can I leave the bed made up?

Yes. All beds come with complete with our unique quick release straps, enabling the bedding to stay in place.

Can a wall bed affect my property value?

Yes. Beds that fold into the wall are creating more space, a dual purpose room, an extra room, which is the best way to increase your properties value. It also improves the letting potential of rental property.

What are the alternatives to a wall bed?

• Sofa Bed - rarely a comfortable sofa or a comfortable bed, and certainly not quick to make up.
• Conventional Bed - takes up floor space, even when not in use.
• Home extension or larger property - both expensive alternatives.

Where could I use a wall bed?

Children need a safe place to play and learn, teenagers need space to study and a place to meet friends, and by using a wall bed, you can give them that space. Have you got a computer? Need a quiet place to work? What about a study? How about a hobby room or loft conversion? Or even a dining room?

Studio apartments, guest houses, and hotels have all benefited from the flexibility of a wall bed.

What are the different types of wall bed?

• The SwingAway Wall Bed System - With a pre-set counter balance mechanism, allowing finger touch operation. Very easy to install and it can hide behind a curtain, blind, in a cabinet or be left on view - whatever suits the room. Doors cannot be attached to the base of this bed. Also referred to as CE system.
• The FoldAway Wall Bed System - This bed is designed so a one-piece door (often 2 or 3 doors joined together) can be attached to the base of the bed. It has to go into a purpose built cabinet. An adjustable sprung mechanism allows finger touch operation. This system has a 'manual leg'. Also referred to as CM system.
• The HideAway Wall Bed System - An adjustable sprung mechanism allows for finger touch operation, an electric version is also available. This bed has to go into a purpose built cabinet. A combination of a sub frame and an automatic leg allows doors (often 4/6 doors joined together) to pivot so the top door forms the footboard when the bed is down. Also referred to as CA system.

Are they easy to install?

Yes. The most popular wall bed in Hideaway's range is the SwingAway, a DIY system which can be installed in half an hour using no special fixings.

Who will install my wall bed?

The type of bed and furniture you choose will reflect how and who your wall bed sytem is installed by. The options are: install the bed & furniture yourself; arrange for your own carpenter / joiner to install; use a direct installation service by our wall bed specialists (subject to location). Are the beds heavy to lift?

All Hideaway's mechanisms have been designed to have a safe, light and easy action even with the bedding and mattress in place. Using a sprung counter-balance, the wall beds are designed to be almost weightless to lift (but with enough weight to stay on the floor!)
